Discovering the rust fungi (Pucciniales) of Yvelines

International Plant Health Day, celebrated each year on May 12, is this year an opportunity to spotlight the publication of a particularly lavishly illustrated article: “A photographic contribution to the inventory of Pucciniales (rust fungi) around Clayes-sous-Bois.” This second 2025 special issue of the Bulletin des Naturalistes des Yvelines attests to the close links between citizen science (amateur botanists/mycologists) and more academic disciplines—here, Phytopathology represented by researchers from units such as BIOGER.

This special supplement highlights 107 species of obligate parasitic micromycetes of vascular plants belonging to the order Pucciniales, commonly known as “rusts.” These species were recorded between 2020 and 2025 in the commune of Les Clayes-sous-Bois (Yvelines, France) and its surrounding areas. Macroscopic and microscopic photographs of each species are provided. Some are accompanied by a depiction of their parasitic life cycle and a description of their main biological and ecological characteristics. Discovery dates and GPS coordinates are included to facilitate locating most of them. Notable records include Puccinia globulariae on Globularia bisnagarica—a rust seldom documented in France—and Uromyces plumbarius on Oenothera lindheimeri—a North American rust never before identified in Europe, which was recently reported.
